She wants to come through her own door and stay in her own house. You may think the first question is what a ramp costs. The better first question is what the ramp must let her do.

A short, straight route over firm ground is different from a route that climbs higher, turns around a corner, crosses soft soil, or ends at a narrow door. Those differences drive the amount of material, site work, labor, and maintenance. Before you ask for proposals, walk the trip from the vehicle to the chair or bed she uses inside. These are the six things the house has to hold.

The person making the trip

What makes it hold: Write down how she will use the route. Will she walk with support, use a wheelchair, or be pushed by another person? Include the space needed for a helper to stay beside or behind her. A route built for one way of moving may be hard to use when the person or equipment changes.

When it becomes a question for the care team: Ask before choosing dimensions if you do not know how she is expected to move at home. Ask what equipment she will use, whether a helper must stay with her, and whether that helper needs room to turn or pause. A wider or longer route may cost more, but rebuilding a route that cannot support the actual trip costs more still.

The height between the ground and the door

What makes it hold: Measure the full vertical rise from the arrival surface to the surface she must reach. Do not count only the steps. Include the porch, threshold, and any change in the ground along the route. More rise usually means more ramp length, more supports, and more material.

When it becomes a question for the care team: If the required route appears too steep or too long for the way she moves, ask whether a different entrance would work better. The nearest door is not always the easiest or least costly door to use.

The straight space and the turns

What makes it hold: Mark a possible route with tape, cones, or chairs. Look for air conditioners, gates, window wells, downspouts, trees, property lines, and paths other people still need. Every turn can require a larger platform and more framing. A straight route often uses fewer parts, but only if it reaches a usable door without blocking the rest of the house.

When it becomes a question for the care team: Ask whether she and her helper can manage the proposed turns with the equipment she will use. A drawing that fits the yard may not give them enough room to change direction safely and calmly.

The places to stop

What makes it hold: Check the level space at the bottom, at every turn, and outside the door. The door must be able to open without forcing her backward onto the slope. A landing can add size and cost, but it also gives you a place to unlock the door, change hand position, or wait while someone moves a car.

When it becomes a question for the care team: Ask whether she needs to pause during the trip and whether a helper must stand at the door while holding equipment. If the answer is unclear, act out the trip with the door moving through its full swing before approving the design.

The ground beneath it

What makes it hold: Look at what must support the ramp. Concrete, firm level ground, a slope, loose soil, roots, and drainage problems require different preparation. Ask each contractor to state what ground work is included, what happens to roof and gutter water, and who repairs disturbed walks, planting beds, or railings. Site work can change the price even when two ramps look alike on paper.

When it becomes a question for the care team: Tell the team if weather or standing water may make the route unusable for regular visits or appointments. The care plan depends on a route that remains available, not merely one that works on a dry afternoon.

The doorway and the room beyond it

What makes it hold: Measure the clear opening with the door open, not the distance between the outer edges of the frame. Check the threshold, storm door, screen door, handles, and the space immediately inside. The price may rise if the doorway, threshold, railing, or interior floor must change. Ask for those items to be shown separately so you can compare the same finished trip across proposals.

When it becomes a question for the care team: Ask whether her equipment can cross the threshold and turn inside without requiring a lift or transfer at the door. If the route ends where she still cannot enter, the ramp has not solved the trip.

Compare the whole job

Give every contractor the same route and the same expected use. Ask each proposal to name the ramp, railings, landings, footings, doorway work, ground preparation, permits if required, delivery, installation, maintenance, removal, and repair of the ground afterward. Mark any item left out. A lower proposal may simply stop earlier.

You are not trying to buy the largest ramp or the smallest bill. You are trying to build one continuous trip that she and the person helping her can actually make. When the measurements, care questions, and finished scope agree, you can see what is driving the price and what the house will truly hold.
